Lawyers seek separate district status for Talcher

Lawyers on Thursday threatened to launch agitation if the State Government did not declare Talcher as a separate district soon.

TALCHER:Lawyers on Thursday threatened to launch agitation if the State Government did not declare Talcher as a separate district soon. The decision was taken by the general body of Talcher bar association at a meeting chaired by president Santsoh Kumar Sahu.

Sahu said the State Government should declare Talcher as a separate district by the end of March. “If our demand is not met, we will paralyse the industrial belt, including including the coal mines,” he warned.

“People of Talcher are facing a lot of hardships as they have to go to Angul for redressal of their grievances. After formation of the new district, Talcher will have a family court. Moreover, there will be no misuse of coal royalty which is collected from Talcher,” the bar association president said and added that the new Talcher district will consist of Pallahara sub-division.

He also urged the Government to make certain courts, which have been already approved, functional at Talcher. On the day, the lawyers boycotted court work to show solidarity with High Court bar association, which is demanding filling up of judge vacancies.
