Similipal Tiger Reserve probe into firing practice

The six forest personnel, who were present at the spot, have been asked to record their statements at the STR office within two days.

BARIPADA: The Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) authorities have begun investigation into the alleged firing practice in Jenabil inside the core area by a youth in presence of his father who happens to be a former honorary wildlife warden.   The video of the incident had gone viral recently, sparking concerns among environmentalists.  The video showed Abishek Acharya, son of former honourary wildlife warden Vanoomitra Acharya, practising with a gun in the core area. Six forest personnel were also seen present in the clip that is doing rounds on social media.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Director of STR JD Pati told The New Indian Express that the video was shot in January, 2014. “We have launched a probe into the incident. The six forest personnel, who were present at the spot, have been asked to record their statements at the STR office within two days following which a report will be submitted to the PCCF (Wildlife),” said Pati.

Environmentalists had questioned Vanoomitra’s act of taking his minor son to the core area in violation of the guidelines. The forest officials have also come under fire for providing an official rifle to Abishek and allowing him to practise gun firing inside the prohibited area.

As per reports, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Sandeep Tripathi has directed Pati to inquire into the matter and submit a report. Advertisements have also been published in newspapers for the public to come forward with any information regarding the incident, he added.
