Man held for assault of woman traffic cop

Police sources said the miscreant also twisted the hands of the woman constable when she took away the keys of his twowheeler.

BHUBANESWAR: A man was arrested on Friday for allegedly manhandling a woman traffic constable at a traffic post under Kharavel Nagar police limits on Thursday evening. The miscreant has been identified as Sushant Nayak. According to sources, traffic constable Mili Sahoo and home guard SK Tripathy intercepted Nayak when he jumped red light near Institute of Engineers. According to police, Nayak was riding a two-wheeler with no registration number in an inebriated state.

He was neither wearing a helmet, said sources. After being stopped, Nayak started arguing with the traffic personnel after being waylaid for jumping the red light. Nayak allegedly snatched the wireless VHF handset from Sahoo and threw it on the road. Police sources said the miscreant also twisted the hands of the woman constable when she took away the keys of his twowheeler. Subsequently, the other traffic police present at the spot alerted PCR vehicle personnel about the matter.

The PCR vehicle personnel reached the spot and took Nayak to Traffic Police Station at AG Square. Nayak’s associates allegedly threatened to protest in front of the Traffic police station if police did not release him. Sahoo later lodged a complaint with Kharavel Nagar police in this regard. “A case has been registered under various Sections of the IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act and Sahoo was produced in a court on Friday,” Kharavel Nagar Police said.
