Man held for rape on pretext of marriage in Odisha

JAIPUR:  A 24-year-old man was arrested by Mangalpur police for allegedly raping a woman on several occasions on the pretext of marrying her in Tarapada village of the district on Friday. The accused, identified as Ashok Kumar Muduli, a resident of Khosalpur village, was arrested after the 22-year-old woman filed a complaint with the local police.

The victim in her complaint alleged that the accused had been raping her for the last four years on the pretext of marriage.

According to police, the accused and the victim fell in love four years back. The accused sexually exploited the woman on several occasions after promising to marry her, police said. She finally informed her parents, who approached the local police for justice on Wednesday. Based on the report, police registered a case and started an investigation into the incident.

Police arrested Ashok on Thursday night and sent both the victim and the accused to the district headquarters hospital for medical examination on Friday. “The accused was arrested under Section 376 of IPC,” said a police official. He added that the man was forwarded to the local court on Friday and later, remanded to judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected.
