The Koraput Collector has initiated a probe into Bariput stone quarry tragedy in which two drivers lost their lives.

JEYPORE: The Koraput Collector has initiated a probe into Bariput stone quarry tragedy in which two drivers lost their lives. The two drivers died after being trapped under the boulders as stones caved in.

According to sources, Koraput Additional District Magistrate (ADM) has has been appointed as the inquiry officer. The ADM will submit a report on the stone quarry mishap.Koraput Collector K S Chkaravarti directed sub-collectors of Jeypore and Koraput  to furnish reports on illegal stone quarry units operating in their areas by the end of June.

“Both the sub-collectors have been asked to verify whether all firms or leaseholders carrying out stone quarrying are following the norms or not. They will submit the report soon,” Chakravarti said.Meanwhile, police have urged the locals to report on any illegal stone quarrying unit operating in their area. Koraput SP KV Singh said police had conducted raids in Damonjodi and Borrigumma areas, where stone quarry lease holders were reportedly flouting the norms.

“We have arrested the defaulters and efforts are on to check such activities in the district,” the SP said, adding that police stations had been asked to monitor illegal stone quarrying activities. “We are requesting the administration to cancel licences of all who are not complying with safety norms “ he added.
