Heatwave: Summer vacations of Odisha schools extended till June 25

Earlier, the State government had extended the vacations from June 17 to June 20 due the prevailing heatwave conditions and the schools wee scheduled to reopen on June 21.

BHUBANESHWAR: Due to the prevailing heatwave across the state with mercury hovering over 41 degrees for the past three days, Odisha government on Tuesday extended the summer holidays for schools till June 25.

"Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced to extend school holidays till June 25 in the state to give relief to school going children from the extreme heatwave conditions," the Chief Minister's Office said while informing that the schools will now reopen on June 26.

Earlier, the State government had extended the vacations from June 17 to June 20 due the prevailing heatwave conditions and the schools were scheduled to reopen on June 21. For last three days, temperature in many places in the state remained above 41 degree Celsius and the capital city sizzling at 42.3 degree Celsius on Sunday and 42.2 degree Celsius on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the temperature of the state capital at 12 pm remained around 41 degree Celsius, though the cloudy weather accompanied by rain in the afternoon brought some respite for the denizens from the rising mercury. The south-west monsoon that touched Odisha on June 8, weakened immediately and unlikely to strengthen before June 23, sources in the Regional Meteorological Centre here informed.

Monday evening the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar had informed that the temperature would continue to hover around 41 degree Celsius in the Capital and its adjoining areas for next 24 hours. "The heat wave condition will prevail in some parts of the State for 48 hours. However, we are expecting that the monsoon will revive within three days," Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar HR Biswas had said.
