BHUBANESWAR:Bringing much needed respite to the denizens, a short spell of rain lashed the Capital City on Tuesday afternoon even as the gusty wind wreaked havoc causing inconvenience for commuters.
The sudden outburst of rain on a day when the City recorded a temperature of 42.3 degree Celsius during day time brought down the mercury level to a huge respite for the residents reeling under sweltering heat.
The storm that started at around 3.50 pm lasted for about 30 minutes.

However, the strong wind risked the lives of people as trees were uprooted in many places. At least 10 agitating teachers at Lower PMG area were injured when a tree got uprooted due to wind and fell on them. The wind blew heavy for some time.

The rain also caused water-logging in low lying areas of Laxmisagar, Acharya Vihar, Nayapalli and a few other places. Besides, the movement of vehicular traffic was disrupted. Officials of the Met department said it was a convective precipitation which is generally more intense and of shorter duration. The met department has also predicted similar short-spell rain in some parts of coastal belt on Wednesday.
Rain uprooted trees in many areas including near AG office. The rain also caused power failure in Paika Nagar, Delta Colony, Soubhagya Nagar and a few other areas.

“There is no electricity in our area since 2.30 pm and the power supplier said it will come at around 9-10 pm. It is now 11.10 pm but the supply is yet to be restored. Is this what u call thearlier #SmartCity where there is power cut for more than 5hrs?,” tweeted Abhipsa Mohapatra, a city resident.
