More showers in Odisha in next 24 hours

BHUBANESWAR: The south-west monsoon has become active in the remaining parts of the State. On Wednesday, rainfall occurred at most locations with heavy rain recorded at one or two places over Odisha. Highest rainfall of 9 cm was recorded at Tensa in Sundargarh district and Gop in Puri district.

Director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar HR Biswas said, “Light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur in many places in the next 24 hours while heavy to very heavy rainfall will occur in isolated places.” Heavy rainfall might occur at one or two places over Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh and Sambalpur districts in the next 24 hours. The east-west trough at mean sea level from Punjab to east Assam now runs from west Rajasthan to northwest Bay of Bengal across north Madhya Pradesh, south-east Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Odisha and extends up to 1.5 km above the mean sea level.

The cyclonic circulation over Bihar and West Bengal has merged with the east west trough. “The cyclonic circulation over southern parts of Bangladesh and neighbourhood now lies over coastal Odisha, adjoining areas of north-west Bay of Bengal and West Bengal,” Biswas said. Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, has also issued a warning for fishermen asking them to be cautious while venturing into the sea.
