107 held for bid to picket CM’s residence

Hundred and seven activists of the Republican Party of India (RPI) were arrested when they attempted to picket Chief Minister N Rangasamy’s residence here on Thursday.

The agitators charged that dalits were deprived of their rights in the reservation of seats, which were allotted on a rotational basis in the local body elections by the State Election Commission. The RPI activists further demanded that the reservation pattern of 2006 civic polls be reimplemented this time as well. They also alleged that the delimitation of wards was not done as per the latest census, which has disadvantaged the dalits.

The agitators were denied permission to stage the demonstration, so they attempted to take out a rally in the Vazhuthavur road. The police, however, did not allow them to proceed towards CM’s residence and arrested them.and arrested them.
