CHENNAI: Madras High Court today granted anticipatory bail to Editor of Tamil bi-weekly 'Nakkeeran' R Gopal, who apprehended arrest for publishing an alleged derogatory and defamatory article in the magazine about Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Justice M M Sundresh granted the relief while passing orders on the petition filed by Gopal.

Gopal had moved the court for anticipatory bail saying a total of 24 FIRs had been registered against him at different places in connection with the article which mentioned about eating habits of Jayalalithaa.

During arguments yesterday, Public Prosecutor I Subramanian had strongly opposed grant of anticipatory bail to Gopal saying the article was 'absolutely scurrilous' and the Editor had violated an earlier high court order relating to publication of personal matter of Jayalalithaa.

AIADMK workers had attacked the office of the magazine here on January 7 protesting the publishing of the article.
