Plea against formation of TN youth police rejected

A writ plea to declare null and void the decision of the State government to create TN Youth Special Police Force was rejected by the Madras High Court on Friday.

A division bench comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and Aruna Jagadeesan dismissed a public interest writ petition from advocate P Pugalenthi. When regularly appointed police personnel were in place and another 12,000 were undergoing training, there was no need to form the new force with a strength of 10,000, petitioner contended.

The bench noted that except making a statement in the Assembly, no rules or regulations were framed governing the said service.

‘‘Therefore, we are of the opinion that unless and until the said statement of the Chief Minister has become a law, the petitioner has no right to oppose and assail the correctness of the same,’’ the bench said, and dismissed the PIL.
