The Cauvery Supervisory Committee (CSC)which met in New Delhi on Friday directed Karnataka to release 26 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu during the period between November to January as per the final verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
At the end of the meeting, Alok Rawat, Secretary, Union Ministry of Water Resources, who is also heading the Cauvery Supervisory Committee told that all the States, which are party to the dispute, are bound to share water as per the final order which means Karnataka should give 26 tmcft from November to January to Tamil Nadu.
During the meeting, Tamil Nadu government represented by Chief Secretary Sheela Balakrishnan, PWD Secretary M Saikumar and other senior officials requested the committee to direct Karnataka not to draw water for summer irrigation. Besides, Karnataka should not have any hydro electric projects or irrigation projects till the Cauvery Management Board is formed.
During the last three meetings of the CSC, Karnataka refused to accept the demand made by Tamil Nadu to release water as per the final verdict of the Tribunal. Though, the northeast monsoon has set in in TN, so far the rainfall across the State is insufficient.
