Warrant out against Vijayakant on defamation

A local court on Wednesday issued a warrant against DMDK chief Vijayakant for not appearing before it in a defamation case filed on behalf of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

A local court on Wednesday issued a warrant against DMDK chief Vijayakant for not appearing before it in a defamation case filed on behalf of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Government Pleader Pon Siva had filed a case against Vijayakant for making derogatory remarks against Jayalalithaa at a public meeting organised by the DMDK in the municipality ground here on August 30 last year.

The Principal Sessions Court, which is hearing the case, had ordered the defendant to be present on September 25.

However, Vijayakant did not turn up for the hearing and his counsel filed a petition seeking an exemption for his appearance.

However, Principal District Judge Krishnamoorthy refused to admit the submission of Vijayakant’s counsel and issued bailable warrant against the actor-turned-politician.

The next hearing of the case was further posted for October 7.
