Team to Implement Cauvery Panel Fiat

CHENNAI: Union Minister of Water Resources Uma Bharti has formed a pro-tem committee with the Secretary of her ministry as chairman and the chief secretaries of the States concerned and the chairman of CWC as members, for implementation of the order of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal to form the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Regulation Committee.

This, since the governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have taken different stands on the matter.

The Union Minister also informed PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss that the Karnataka government had clarified that they had no plans to proceed with the construction of any project without informing the Supreme Court, as a case was pending.

The Minister, in a letter to Anbumani, referred to the demand raised by him in the Lok Sabha on March 3, 2015, besides his letter on March 18 and April 29 this year on formation of the Cauvery Management Board.

Uma Bharti said she examined the matter in her Ministry and the only one proposal for Shivasamudram Run of the River Project was received in the Central Water Commission from Karnataka Power Corporation Limited in February 2014.

The proposal had been returned to them stating that in view of the final award of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, the views of basin States, especially Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, might be obtained in the proposal of the project and furnished to CWC along with the project report, to enable its examination from inter-State angle.  She also claimed that no other project report had been received.

The proposal for the project at Mekedatu, as and when received, would be examined as per clause-XIII of the final order dated February 5, 2007 of the CWDT.
