178 Get Admission into Elementary Edu Diploma

CHENNAI: On the first day (Wednesday) of the four-day online counselling for admissions into Diploma in Elementary Education that began across the State for the two year programme that is being offered by State Council of Education Research and Training Tamil Nadu, 178 students got admission, according to officials of State Council of Education Research and Training Tamil Nadu.

The course is being offered at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) and Government Teachers’ Training Institute (TTI). There are 30 DIETs and nine TTI, other than these there are 41 government-aided and four self-financing institutions that are offering the Diploma in Elementary Education in the State.

Speaking to Express, a senior official of the State Council of Education Research and Training, Tamil Nadu said, there are 2,400 seats in DIET and 480 seats in TTI. “DIET received 2,768 applications, of which 250 are boys. The students who complete the diploma are eligible to work in the elementary schools. The government enforced a new rule over two decades ago that only requires women teachers to be appointed for standards one to three.”

“There are over 10,000 seats in all these institutions, but there are not many takers. On Wednesday, counselling was conducted for admission into DIET for nine categories including special category, arts, vocational and science for girls, Telugu medium (both girls and boys), Tamil medium (boys) and Urdu (boys and girls), in Urdu only one boy applied and he also did not turn up for the counselling,” the official added.

On Thursday, counselling for reaming seats in DIET and TTI and private institutions will be conducted. The counselling will end on July 4.
