COIMBATORE: More than 700 BJP cadre were arrested by city and district police for staging protests in front of liquor shops on Friday. They demanded total prohibition to be enforced in the state.

Police said, 428 persons were arrested by the city police, for staging illegal demonstrations and protests. Similarly, the district police arrested around 400 protestors. The arrests were made with relatively little fuss as the protestors had come prepared to board waiting police vehicles, which quickly rushed them away.

The protests had no major impact on traffic nor on the functioning of government-run liquor outlets.
