Relocate TASMAC Shop, Demand Students

VELLORE: As many as 66 nursing college students were arrested for staging a demonstration on Saturday demanding that the TASMAC shop located opposite the college on Filterpet Road be moved, as they alleged that the men who consume liquor trouble commuters as well as the students of the nursing college, with women students being in constant fear. Police released the students in the evening after holding them in a marriage hall.

The students, majority of them female, of a private nursing college were engaged in a war of words with the police officials. The students also attempted to lock the TASMAC shop.

Police personnel warned the students that protesting without permission is an offence and asked them in vain to call off the protest. Some students did disperse after the police warning but there was increased tension when two or three male students blocked the road with boulders.

“People are consuming alcohol late at night and sleeping in front of the college and creating trouble for the students in the morning,” said a girl student.

The only demand of the students is to move the TASMAC shop from Filterpet Road to some other location and create a safe environment for the students of the college.
