VELLORE:  A group of Dalit youths of Athipet, reportedly assaulted a Muslim youth over an argument that arose after the Dalit youths had parked their car on the service-lane of the National Highway at 9 AM on Tuesday.

The assault took place a few metres away from the Kaveripakkam police station.

Four youth, two of whom have been identified as Vivekanandan and Poovarasan, had parked their car on the service lane of the National Highway.

J Zaheer (26) of Kaveripakkam asked them to move the car a little further as he thought it would obstruct traffic movement and cause inconvenience during school hours.

This led to a quarrel and ended in physical blows.

In the melee, Zaheer sustained injuries on his head and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Special Sub Inspector Munikrishnan of Kaveripakkam station rushed to the spot to conduct an inquiry and bring the situation under control.

However, the four youth sped off in their car after pushing the SSI away.

Following this, Zaheer’s relatives and friends and members of Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam gathered at the police station demanding immediate arrest of the four youths.

The police filed a case against Poovarasan and the three others on charges of attempting to murder, assault and verbal abuse and have launched a search for them.

However, Poovarasan denied his involvement in the assault and claimed that the police were trying to frame him in the case.

It may be recalled that in September 2014, Poovarasan was involved in a case (still pending) against the then Inspector of Kaveripakkam, Kandipan and two other policemen for reportedly torturing Poovarasan while in illegal detention.

The case is now being looked into by the CB-CID police.

Poovarasan alleged that the police were trying to exact revenge for the case pending against them claiming that he was in the Government Hospital, Kancheepuram for treatment at the time of the incident.

“A representative of NGO Makkal Mandram, was with me when I had gone to the hospital,” he claimed.
