Cops Told to Probe Pregnancy of Minor Rescued From Marriage

PUDUCHERRY: The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has directed police to enquire into a complaint of a minor girl, who allegedly became pregnant before her proposed marriage with a relative.

According to sources, on July 11, an anonymous call was received by CWC chairperson Vidya Ramkumar stating that a girl, aged 17, belonging to Sivaranthagam Village was being married off at the Thiruvanthipuram temple. Following this, the Protection Officer informed Mangalam sub-inspector and the marriage was stopped and the girl taken to a child care home.

While at the home, it came to light that the girl was 4-months pregnant because of her relationship with one Ramesh (21) who is a relative. Ramesh is working as marketing personnel with a firm based in Bengaluru. After a complaint was filed with the police, members of both the families were found absconding from the village.

According to sources, since CWC is now seized of the issue, it is mandatory for it to direct the police to enquire and file a case on behalf of the victim.
