Muslim Outfit Raises Pitch For Prohibition

The State unit of the AIMIM urged the State to consider declaring a total prohibition of liquor across the State.

VELLORE:The State unit of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party, on Sunday, urged the State government to consider declaring a total prohibition of liquor across the State.

Joint secretary of the unit, G S Iqbal, said that a resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting chaired by him. He said that the soaring costs in health-care directly related to people drinking incurred by the government and the ill-effects of liquor on society are far greater than the revenue collected from the sales of liquor. Iqbal also expressed concern that the historic mosque inside the Vellore Fort continues to remain closed for prayers despite efforts taken by various Muslim organisations to have the mosque open.
