VELLORE: Vellore Corporation is planning to map the Fort City’s properties that are owned by the local body and private individuals through a Geographic Information System (GIS). After assessing the properties, they are also planning to post the information on the public domain making it easier for the Corporation to assess and collect taxes.

The Geographic Information System database will have applications in urban planning and civic services, including monitoring property tax assessment and collection, the availability of drinking water supply and drainage networks.

“The Corporations is in the process of collecting details of the lands and buildings in most of the Corporation and municipalities with the help of State governments,” according to a Corporation official, who added that the mapping process through GIS is in its initial stages and it will be completed in the near future.

Once the mapping is completed, officials would inspect the spots to verify the images.

“Everything in the city will be assessed through Geographic Information System, once it is completed. Many buildings in city are not

paying property taxes and the GIS database will help to generate more taxes which will increase corporation revenue,” said a town planning official in the Corporation.
