PDS Rice Smugglers Assault Informer

COIMBATORE: City police are on the lookout for a five-member gang that assaulted a police informer who had been tipping off Food Cell-CID police about the activities of a gang of PDS rice smugglers.

The victim, B Thangapandiyan (25) from Edayarpalayam, Kuniyamuthur, was attacked on Saturday by the gang at Ukkadam Bus Stand. Thangapandiyan was admitted to a private hospital for treatment. He was allegedly attacked with clubs by the gang.

Police said that the gang targeted Thangapandiyan as he had tipped off police which led to the arrest of a few of the smugglers.

The gang has been booked under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapons), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
