Woman Gets Life Term for Murder

COIMBATORE: A 34-year-old woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of an elderly woman in her house in Selvarajapuram in Kannampalayam, Sulur.

The victim, Perumal Ammal (85) was stabbed to death On January 25, 2013, by M Saraswathy (34), a native of Thoothukudi district. She was working as a maid in the area.

Saraswathy forcibly took three sovereigns in gold ornaments from the victim and punctured her neck with a knife when she resisted. The victim's daughter, Manickam, who had gone out of the house, returned by then and saw Saraswathy, but the latter pushed her out of the way and fled .

The Sulur police registered a case under sections 302 (murder), 392 (robbery) and 449 (house trespass to commit offence) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested Saraswathy.

M N Senthilkumar, Additional District Judge V, sentenced Saraswathy to life in prison for murder and seven years in jail for trespass. The sentences are to run concurrently. Fines amounting to `3,000 was also imposed on Saraswathy, who has been lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
