Alarm Foils Burglars' Bid to Loot ATM

CHENNAI: An attempt to break into the cash tray of a private bank’s ATM machine at Peerkankarani near Tambaram was foiled by the burglar alarm which went off after the masked duo tried to pry open the outer cover of the machine early morning Monday.

The two miscreants used sheets of rain that lashed the city to their advantage and entered the ATM of ICICI bank on old Grand Southern Trunk Road in Peerkankaranai where there was no security guard.

The masked duo targeted the surveillance cameras first before they got down to the ATM machine. When they tampered with the outer cover, the burglar alarm in the kiosk went off. The hopeful burglars panicked and fled, leading their trade tools behind.

Though the ATM was sparingly used so late at night, the road always has traffic. Passers-by who heard the alarm alerted the control room. Peerkankaranai police soon came to the spot. Forensic experts were called in and different sets of finger prints were lifted from the crime scene. The prints were sent for matching habitual offenders and a case was registered.  The available CCTV footage until the two burglars damaged them was also being studied to identify the two.
