Hired Gang, Friend Held in Kidnap Case

CHENNAI: In a twist to the kidnap tale of a medico for Rs 1.5 crore ransom reported last month, a four-member supari gang from Ramanathapuram and a friend of the abducted, were arrested on Friday.

Police said Ajmal, a II year MBBS student at a private College, was abducted by his three friends, of whom two were his collegemates - Vigneshwaran 20, his classmate and their senior Halik. A call from Halik’s mobile was made to the family seeking ransom. The boy was then rescued from Ramanathapuram. Cops initially dismissed the kidnap as being cooked up by the boy himself to buy a luxury car. However, sustained interrogations exposed the bigger scheme behind the kidnap. Halik had reportedly collected money to the tune of `25 lakh from his juniors to leak the semester question papers. But, could not lay his hands on the question paper. His juniors began pushing for the money. This was when Halik decided to kidnap Ajmal.

Halik roped in Vigneshwaran and Azar, a common friend to Ajmal. The trio also hired a quartet from Ramanathapuram to carry out the kidnap.
