4 SL Refugees Freed from Special Camp

TIRUCHY: Four Sri Lankan Tamils walked free out of the special camp in the premises of central prison as per government orders on Saturday. One inmate has been shifted to the camp in Tiruvannamalai district.

According to sources, as many as 14 inmates are lodged in the special prison from different periods for their involvement in supporting the LTTE and charged with violation of 3(2)(e) of Foreigners Act. Earlier, more than 30 were lodged at the camp. On the basis of their conduct during their stay, the government used to order their release.

Out of the 14 prisoners, nine inmates identified as Yuvapriyan, T Maheshwaran, P Sivaneshwaran, K Maheshwaran, K Krishnamoorthy, G Sureshkumar, Rajendran, Udhaychandran and Vijaykumar were on a fast unto death from Oct 1, demanding that all of them be released. One of the inmates, Vijaykumar, was admitted to hospital as his health deteriorated.

In the meantime, the special board recommended to the government their release based on their family conditions. On Friday, the government ordered the release of Maheswaran, Sivaneswaran, Chandra Kumar and Suresh Kumar. An order of transfer to the special camp at Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai was issued for Kumaraguru. On Saturday, family members of all except Suresh Kumar received them outside the camp. Relatives of Suresh Kumar, who is undergoing treatment for fractured legs, are expected to arrive on Monday.
