COIMBATORE:A 30-year-old mason was set ablaze by his much-abused wife here on Thursday after he allegedly threatened to commit self-immolation by dousing himself with kerosene. The man died late night Friday.
Police said R Mayavan (30), a mason of KV Palayam near Vellalore, had married M Revathi, (26) a decade ago. The alcoholic Mayavan used to abuse his wife frequently. On Thursday, he had a tiff with her and beat her. Later, he asked her to make dinner for him. But, Revathi refused.
Angered by her refusal, Mayavan locked her outside the house, doused himself with kerosene and threatened to commit self-immolation. Frustrated by his repeated torture, Revathi lit a match and set her husband on fire.
Mayavan suffered 80 per cent burns and was taken to CMCH on Thursday where he died on Friday.
Podanur police registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) and changed it to 302 (murder) after Mayavan’s death. Revathi was arrested on Friday and remanded in the special jail for women in Coimbatore prison.
