Hindu Annaiyar Munnani Members Demand Prohibition

VELLORE: Members of the Hindu Annaiyar Munnani (the Hindu Mothers - a wing of the Hindu Munnani) on Sunday staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate braving rains demanding the closure of liquor shops. Led by district organiser S Ranjani, the members holding placards with social messages said liquor has affected lakhs of families especially women who have been pushed back in socio-economic development programmes. Tipplers’ families are looked down upon by society and they lose respect among the relatives. The education prospects of children also get affected. The alcoholic bread winner loses his physical and mental health and in some families many victims die forcing the families to the streets. The state government should therefore close liquor shops, stop liquor sales and declare total prohibition, they said.
