Palanquin Practice in Srirangam Challenged

MADURAI: Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the commissioner of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Board on a petition seeking to prohibit the “inhuman practice” of carrying priests in a palanquin inside Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Srirangam in Tiruchy district.

Petitioner, advocate Viswanathan of Periyappam village in Karur district, said either Vedavyasa R Lakshmi Narasimha Bhattar, Parasara Alagiya Singer Bhattar and Parasara Renganatha Battar from Srirangam or their branches are carried in a palanquin by fellow human beings inside the temple during the Brammaratham function scheduled for Nov 23 this year.

Such a practice, he said was against the equality enshrined in the constitution.
