Expo on Healthy Eating Held On World Diabetes Day

VELLORE: In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2015, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism - attached to the Christian Medical College here - organised a one-day exhibition and poster competition on the theme of ‘Healthy Eating in Diabetes’.

Volunteers at the Dietary Stall were taught about proper diabetic diet that can help keep blood sugar under control, calorie calculation and the three meals-three snacks pattern.

The physiotherapy stall explained about various types of exercises useful for reducing body weight, how to deal with various musculo-skeletal problems of diabetes, including frozen shoulder.

The foot care and footwear stall explained how diabetes had emerged as the leading cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputation. The stall also explained about the services of the hospital’s foot clinic and its services. Besides techniques of proper foot care, demonstration of callosity removal were also performed for the benefit of patients.  Volunteers at the cardiology stall taught the visitors about various aspects of cardiovascular disease in diabetes and its prevention. 

At the ophthalmology stall, it was explained how diabetes had a serious impact on eye and how regular fundus examination was the need of the hour. Fundus examination was done on patients accompanied by various protocols to prevent retinopathy. Various types of footwear made of micro cellular rubber (MCR) were displayed and patients were told to use such footwear at the prosthetic and orthotic stall. 

Different types of education materials like HbA1c sheets and pamphlets were issued to improve awareness about diabetes.
