29-year-old Man Gets 10-year Jail for Raping Relative

THOOTHUKUDI: The Mahila Court here on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a 29-year-old man to 10 years for raping his relative and making her pregnant.

According to the prosecution, Murugaperumal, a daily wager of Subramaniapuram near Sathankulam, and his 25-year-old relative were in a relationship. As the woman’s father passed away and her mother was a psychiatric patient, had physical relationship after promising to marry her. Subsequently, the woman became pregnant.

After this, when the woman asked Murugaperumal to marry her, he refused. The woman then lodged a complaint with Thattarmadam Police, who registered a case of rape and arrested Murugaperumal.

A year later, she gave birth to a baby boy and Murugaperumal claimed that he was not the father of the baby.

Hence, a DNA test was conducted on the baby to confirm whether Murugaperumal was the biological father or not. The  test confirmed that he was the father. Following the confirmation he was convicted claimed Police.

When the case came up for hearing on Tuesday, Mahila Court Judge J Flora sentenced Murugaperumal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on him. Later, Murugaperusmal was lodged in Palayamkottai central prison.

Near Dharmapuri, a 36- year-old man was on Tuesday sentenced to seven years imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 6,000 for kidnapping and raping a speech impaired girl in 2001.

According to police, accused Raja of Kambainallur in the district kidnapped and raped the 19- year- old speech impaired girl in June, 2002. Later, the victim’s parents lodged a complaint at the Kambainallur police station after which a case was filed.

On Tuesday, the District Sessions Court Judge Subha Devi convicted him and pronounced the verdict. Later he was remanded in Vellore central prison.
