SFI Wins Pondy University Student Council Polls for First Time

PUDUCHERRY: The Students’ Federation of India (SFI)-Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) alliance swept all the 11 seats to clinch the university students union for the first time in the history of the Pondicherry University.

The SFI emerged as the single largest organisation in the students’ council election held on November 23.

Lankeswaran and Jishnu E N (SFI unit president) were elected as the president and general secretary respectively. SFI unit committee member Anjali S won unopposed to the post of vice president, while Theyventhiran is elected as joint secretary.

Regon, Medha Ramesh, Medha Surendranath, Harsha, Vinoth, Thamizh Kalayarasi are the newly elected executive members of the students union.

An SFI release said the victory is the fourth in a row of recent victories in the student unions of central universities. The students of EFLU, HCU and Central University of Kerala have given their verdict in favour of the SFI.

The Central Executive Committee of SFI congratulated the student community of Pondicherry University for awarding a thumping victory to the SFI-led alliance in the student union elections.

The SFI’s victory reflects the acceptance it gained through addressing different issues of students in Pondicherry University and the uncompromising struggle it waged in the recent years, SFI statement said.

The SFI had waged a political and legal battle against ragging and sexual harassment in Pondicherry University. Many students were suspended over their participation in the protests raising the genuine concerns of the students.
