MDMK Demo for International Probe Into Genocide

CHENNAI: The MDMK will hold protest demonstrations throughout the State on September 21 demanding an international probe into the massacre of innocent Tamils during the military offensive by the Sri Lankan government in 2009.

“The protests will coincide with the protest rally to be held before the UN office at Geneva by the Lankan Tamil diaspora on the same day”, said a resolution passed at the party’s high level meet and district secretaries conclave on Monday.

The resolution said the report of a panel constituted by the UNHRCl which carried out an inquiry into the war crimes would be submitted by this month. The panel was not allowed to enter the place of crime and hence the report would not give justice, the resolution opined.

A new proposal by the US for a domestic probe instead of an international inquiry would make the accused as the judge, the party said. It also pointed out that the Lankan army had not withdrawn from Tamil areas and Sinhalese settlements had not been removed under the new national government in the island.

TVK leader T Velmurugan announced a rail roko on the same day demanding India to introduce a resolution at the UNHRC pressing for an international probe into the massacre of Tamils. He said TN Assembly had passed a resolution demanding an international inquiry into the genocide of Tamils and the Centre had not taken efforts to fulfill the unanimous resolution passed by one of its States, he added.
