THE Tamil Nadu government will absorb the surplus staff of Annamalai University (AU) by redeploying them in various government departments.
The university has a total of 3,836 surplus staff and the government is planning to take a total of 2,350 non-teaching staff. According to university sources, there are 3011 surplus non-teaching staff besides 682 in teaching and 143 in faculty of medicine.
Of these a total of 370 surplus teaching staff in the post of assistant professor have been appointed in the existing vacancies in government arts and science colleges and colleges of education for a period of three years.
It is learnt that University vice-chancellor S Manian has asked Higher Education Secretary to depute the excess non-teaching staff to other institutions after refixing their salary commensurate with the nature of work they are performing.
Sources said the Higher Education secretary has written to departments to absorb 50 assistant programmers of the AU as well as 2,300 surplus non-teaching staff in the category of junior assistant and office assistant.
It is learnt that housing department is considering to fill up some of the junior cadre posts in Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and Directorate of Town and Country Planning by absorbing the staff of AU. Currently, the recruitment process in CMDA is hit by internal problems over the draft rules and cases are pending in the High Court. Similarly, there are plans to accommodate the faculty of medicine in AU into health and family welfare department.
