Lankan navy arrests 4 Pudukai fishermen

PUDUKKOTTAI: Four fishermen who ventured from Jegathappattinam were arrested by Sri Lankan navy on Tuesday and charged with poaching.

Sources said around 850 fishermen of Jegathappattinam ventured into sea on Monday in about 293 mechanised boats. All the boaths returned by early Tuesday except the one owned by Vairakkanu.

On information, members of the mechanized boats fishermen association launched a search operation and also alerted the fisheries department and Coastal Security Group (CSG). Subsequently, they were informed by the fisheries department that the missing fishermen were arrested by Sri Lankan navy when they were fishing near Neduntheevu.

All the arrested fishermen were taken to Kangesanthurai port along their mechanized boat and handed over to officials of Department of fisheries and Aquatic resources (Kangesanthurai) for legal proceedings.
