CUDDALORE: A class 10 student of the Cuddalore municipality school lost his right ear’s hearing ability after his school teacher slapped him with a writing pad on November 3 for not wearing uniform.

The Cuddalore police have registered a case against the teacher on Monday and the Chief Education Officer (CEO) has suspended him until further notice.

The student, Prathap (15), and his mother Praveena are residents of Tsunami Nagar in Sonankuppam village near Cuddalore. After his father died, his mother began working as a tailor from home to make both ends meet.

Praveena said, “Prathap could not wear his uniform pant on November 3 as it was wet from the previous night’s rain. His physical education teacher Kamaal Basha stopped him at around 5.30 pm after school hours and inquired about his uniform pant. The teacher did not listen to Prathap’s explanation. Instead, he repeatedly slapped on my son’s head using the writing pad, leading to hearing loss.”

“In anguish, we visited hospital and subjected Prathap to numerous tests. However, every doctor repeated the same thing that my son had lost his right ear’s hearing ability. They also said there was no recovery as one nerve underwent severe damage,” she added. On information, Cuddalore CEO R Balamurali conducted an inquiry at the school and suspended Kamaal Basha from duty.
