Tamil Nadu seeks details of rules from other States

CHENNAI: The State government has requested the neighbouring States to submit the existing rules for appointment of law officers in their courts, in order to consider its application in Tamil Nadu too, the Madras High Court was informed on Thursday.

When the batch of PILs challenging the appointment of law officers in the Madras High Court, its bench at Madurai and other subordinate courts came up before the first bench of Chief Justice SK Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan on Thursday, Advocate-General told judges that for future appointments, the process of obtaining applications from candidates in other neighbouring States was being considered and a final view would be placed before the court shortly.

Petitioners had alleged that advocates owing allegiance to the ruling party alone were appointed as law officers, even though they lacked basic/necessary qualifications, They prayed to the court to frame appropriate rules/guidelines in a transparent and objective manner.
As regards the existing law officers, the AG submitted an affidavit, which stated that no applications from the aspiring candidates had been invited.
