CHENNAI: A Sub-Inspector of the Aminjikarai police station was attacked by a mobile phone snatcher during the wee hours on Monday, when the suspect was intercepted by the police during a vehicle check-up at Aminjikarai.

Police said P Srinivasan (45), along with three other police personnel, was checking vehicles at Pulla Reddy Avenue on Sunday night. “At around 1. 30 pm, Srinivasan spotted a two-wheeler approaching the check point, but the rider abandoned the motorbike and took his heels,” said a police officer.
“Suspecting him to be a robber, Srinivasan chased the rider who was later identified as M Manikandan (25) of Kolathur. When he nabbed Manikandan, the latter pulled out a small knife from his pocket and attacked the Sub-Inspector,” added the officer.

Hearing screams, the three other cops tried to nab Manikandan who allegedly slit his own throat. Srinivasan and Manikandan were rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Later, Srinivasan was transferred to a private hospital.An investigation revealed that Manikandan had six two-wheeler theft and mobile phone snatching cases registered against him.A case was registered by the Aminjikarai police who arrested Manikandan.
