TN CM asks for ordinance on Jallikattu; first try to ban biriyani, says Kamal

As agitations for resuming jallikattu during Pongal are increasing, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Monday urged.

CHENNAI: As agitations for resuming jallikattu during Pongal are increasing, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promulgate an ordinance to remove the legal impediments for conducting the traditional sport this season.

“Considering the groundswell of sentiment and support for the conduct of jallikattu all over Tamil Nadu, this is an issue on which the Government of India must act with maximum despatch,” the CM wrote to Modi, noting that the traditional sport could not be conducted for the past two years.

Meanwhile, noted actor Kamal Haasan said those against jallikattu should first try to ban biriyani, indicating that the bull was not harmed during the sport. He pointed out that unlike the Spanish bullfight where the matador kills the animal, here it was a taboo to hurt the bull
