Rs 325-crore bonanza for government staff

CHENNAI: Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Wednesday announced Pongal bonus for all regular and temporary employees of the State government, employees of local bodies and aided educational institutions, including teachers on regular time scales of pay for 2015-16. This will mean an additional expenditure of Rs 325.20 crore to the State Exchequer.

In a statement, the Chief Minister said employees in Groups C and D would be paid a bonus equivalent to 30 days emoluments subject to the upper ceiling of Rs 3,000 per month. Those who are receiving pension and family pension and former Village Administrative Officers (Thalayaris and Karnams) would get a Pongal gift of Rs 500.

Employees in Groups A and B, including officials and teachers, those who are on University Grants Commission/All India Council for Technical Education/Indian Council of Agricultural Research scales of pay and All India Service Regulations are eligible for a special bonus of Rs 1,000.

Full-time and part-time employees paid from contingencies at fixed monthly rates, employees on consolidated pay/special time scales of pay, including employees in Nutritious Meal Programme/Integrated Child Nutrition Project (Anganwadi workers), mini Anganwadi workers, Village Assistants on special time scale of pay in Village Panchayats under Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, contract employees, temporary assistants on contract basis, employees on daily wages and those who partly worked on daily wages and subsequently brought under regular establishment and worked continuously for at least 240 days or more during 2015-16 would get Rs 1,000. Last year also the State government had announced a similar bonanza ahead of Pongal.
