CHENNAI: Upon investigating the theft of 13 bikes from the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, the police recovered as many as 17 two-wheelers and three cars, and are questioning a suspect, his partner, a mechanic, and police personnel, including a sub-inspector, said sources.

From the mechanic, it came to light that the one who lifted the bikes was Mohamed Sherif (27), a resident of Korattur. Sherif reportedly staged a suicide bid by cutting his hand and was admitted to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, but officials said it was a drama to save himself in the case.

After questioning him, police said he only targeted Royal Enfield Bullet, Honda Activa and Bajaj Pulsar. Also, he stole only those that have run less than 2,000 km as it is preferred by clients.

While bike thieves are dime a dozen, what made the case different is the alleged involvement of local policemen.

According to police sources, as his mechanic shop is located near the MKB Nagar police station, Shah got close to many of the personnel there. Sub-inspector Balamurugan is alleged to be one of the customers, while another policeman, Karthick, bought a bike from the gang and sold it to Suresh of the same station.

Sources in the city police said personnel from the station, including the SI, are being questioned by the special team to find out who else had bought vehicles from the gang.

In course of the investigation, the special team also secured another person, Asif from Pulianthope, alleged to be a car thief.

Police suspect that the network could be much bigger and further investigations are on.
