CHENNAI: In a daring incident, a three-member armed gang from Uttar Pradesh allegedly attempted to rob a pawn-broker at gunpoint in his house at Jani Jahn Khan Road in Ice House on Sunday. However, the owner managed to nab one of the suspects.

On Sunday, at around 10.30 am, one of the men barged into Munna Lal’s (58) house in one of the busy market streets and noticed the maid Vasanthi cleaning the house. The man, identified as Ravi Kanth Singh, walked through the door connecting the pawnshop and threatened the maid to hand over her valuables and shoved a country-made pistol in her mouth.

“Meanwhile, Munna who was going to open the shop was shocked and stood still. Ravi pointed the gun to Munna and asked him to hand over all the gold and money kept in the house and in the pawn broker’s shop situated near the house,” said a police officer.

Hearing screams, another man Balasubramanian entered the house when Munna Lal allegedly knocked the gun down and nabbed Ravi holding his hands from behind.

By then, the two men dropped the knives in the room and fled the scene. In minutes, the locals came to their rescue and handed over Ravi to the Ice House police station.

During interrogations it was found that Ravi resided at East Coast Road along with his friends.

“He had sneaked in the country-made pistol from UP which is easily available from Rs 3,000 in the market. The gun had 12 rounds of bullets,” said the officer.

Ravi told the police he lived with three other boys. But the complainant denied that the three boys, who were picked from the house, were  the suspects.

A case has been registered by the Ice House police and further investigations are on. Police have launched a search for the duo.
