CHENNAI: Minister for Forests Dindigul C Srinivasan on Monday assured the Assembly that the government would take steps to protect sparrows, an endangered species of birds.

The minister said this, responding to the queries from many members who reminded that the World Sparrow Day was observed on Monday.

Thangam Thennarasu (DMK) said sparrows had been fast extinct in many parts of the State and wanted to know if the government had plans to protect this species.

A large number of birds are coming to Kullur Sandai dam in Virudhuagar district and Avaniyapuram during the season.

Steps should be taken to safeguard them, he said. The minister said if the areas mentioned by the DMK member were suitable for setting up a bird sanctuary as per the laws, steps would be taken after due studies.
