A motorbike mechanic was arrested on Thursday for allegedly stealing a number of bikes in south Chennai.

CHENNAI: A motorbike mechanic was arrested on Thursday for allegedly stealing a number of bikes in south Chennai. Police sources said the accused, Sathish (30) from Puducherry, worked as a motorbike mechanic at a garage in Palavakkam during the day and stole bikes at night.

He stole bikes in Thoraipakkam, Neelankarai and areas around.

“We caught him while doing a regular vehicle check,” said the investigating official with Kannagi Nagar Police.

“When we stopped him, he was riding a motorbike that had been reported stolen. He had no documents or proof of ownership and finally confessed he stole bikes,” the police official said.

Apart from bikes, the police said he would snatch jewellery. He allegedly used to say that he was taking the bikes that had come for repair for a test run and then indulge in chain snatching.

“He would steal the bikes parked outside apartment complexes,” said the investigating official.

“Once he stole the bike, he would sell it to his contacts the next day. We have recovered 35 sovereigns of gold jewellery and one motorbike from him,” the official explained.
