VILLUPURAM: A 17-year-old girl tried to commit suicide near here on Thursday allegedly after she scored low in the NEET. However, the police are inquiring whether the suicide bid was connected to her NEET performance or some other reasons.

Sources said Ashtalakshmi, younger daughter of Radhakrishnan of Seshanganur village near Kandamangalam, was a Class XII student.

She had scored 738 marks in the public examination and eight marks in the NEET, the result of which was published on Monday last. The girl also attended the free NEET coaching class conducted by the Tamil Nadu government.

Ashtalakshmi was apparently upset after the NEET results were announced, and consumed rat poison, which was kept in her house for farm works, on Thursday evening.

The incident came to notice when Ashtalakshmi fainted inside the house. She was soon taken to a private medical college in Puducherry from where she was later shifted to the emergency ward of a government hospital nearby.

The girl is recovering and has been shifted to general ward since then. Speaking to mediapersons on Friday evening, Ashtalakshmi said, “I scored 738 marks in higher secondary and worked hard for passing the NEET. My dream to become a doctor was shattered when the NEET results came, so I took the decision to end my life.”
