CHENNAI: With the Arumughaswamy Commission’s term coming to an end on October 24, the Tamil Nadu government has extended by four months the tenure of the commission probing the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

On September 25, 2017, the Edappadi K Palaiswami-led government appointed retired High Court judge Arumughaswamy as the head of the commission to probe the circumstances that led to the death of Jayalalithaa. The commission was given three months time to complete the inquiry.

As the commission could not complete the inquiry, the tenure was extended till December 2017 and then till June 2018.

The commission has so far inquired about 150 witnesses. Sources close to the Commission said the panel was likely to complete the inquiry in a few months and may not seek a further extension.
