Tamil Nadu vies for better ranking in Niti Aayog's Digital Transformation Index

The indicators were prepared after a national workshop on Digital Transformation Index services held in New Delhi last year and the State is hoping to figure as one of the leaders in the country.

CHENNAI : Tamil Nadu is vying for top rankings under NITI Aayog’s Digital Transformation Index for States’ progress towards digital transformation.This comes after NITI Aayog asked Tamil Nadu to send in the data to assess its progress towards digital transformation.According to official sources, the data will be provided to NITI Aayog in the next two to three weeks. “Through the data, the state’s progress towards digital transformation will be assessed and it will be compared with that of other States acting as a catalyst for reforms,” according to an official from Tamil Nadu egovernance Agency (TNeGA). 

The list of indicators were prepared after a national workshop on Digital Transformation Index services held in New Delhi last year and the State is hoping to figure as one of the leaders in the country.The official told Express that the State has been going through a silent digital revolution unlike others which make only noises. “We have digitised 200 services and most of them pertain to people-oriented services and most of the services are being availed of by people,” he said.

“We are also one of the few States which conduct government department exams online,” he said. Interestingly, people from remote areas are yet to become aware of the services launched by TNeGA.
Currently, the exercise has begun to collect data from various departments. “Once the data is collated, we will submit it before the government,” the official added. 

Among the set of indicators include, the data seeking State government expenditure through digital modes of payment, percentage of government expenditure made digitally and total expenditure made which reaches final beneficiary in a digital mode as percentage of total expenditure mode.

Another one pertains to online First Information Report and complaint registration with Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems, percentage of total First Information Report etc. it is learnt that there could be around 50 indicators evaluating the progress of States.NITI Aayog has sought the data under three phases. One is from April 1, 2016 to September 30, 2016, another from October 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017 and the third is from April 1, 2017 to September 30, 2017.
