KARIMNAGAR: A day after video footage of children being branded with hot spoon at Shishu Griha in the district surfaced, police investigation revealed that the inhuman treatment meted out was not the first of its kind.
It has been learnt that caretakers torturing children by harsh methods is not new. Only the methods differ. Slapping repeatedly, pinching hard on the cheeks, and other kinds of measures are taken at the drop of a hat, all in the name of ‘discipline’.
The incident on Friday night too could have been gone unnoticed, had the CC cameras not been installed on the premises recently.
Women and Child Welfare Department director B Vijendra took the Shishu Griha staff to task over their negligence, and said stringent action would be taken. State Mahila Congress president Nerella Sharada visited and consoled the children.
Surprisingly, a child welfare department officer had attended a conference with state-level officers in Hyderabad on April 18, but chose to not reveal the incident.
The caretakers Battula Buchavva and Kadarla Padma who scalded the children were arrested and sent to judicial custody, Karimnagar Two Town CI K Hari Prasad said.
