State may approach SC on admissions deadline

Procedure of conducting Eamcet-III exam and counselling may extend beyond the Sept 30 cut-off set by the MCI

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government may move Supreme Court (SC), if needed, for an extension of final date for completing the admissions procedure for medical courses.

According to Medical Council of India’s (MCI) regulation, admissions to MBBS and BDS courses should be completed before September 30 for academic year 2016-17. But as Eamcet has to be held once again for students, aspiring to get into medical courses in Telangana, due to Eamcet-II paper leak, the government is contemplating to move the SC for extension of date if needed.

The government is determined to complete the Eamcet-III as quickly as possible and therefore would likely release Eamcet-III notification on Monday. Though the government wants to complete the examination as quickly as possible, students might need at least 25 to 30 days for preparation. If we consider the time needed for preparation, conducting the examination, counseling, among other procedures, then the whole process might get past September 30.

“Efforts would be taken to conduct Eamcet-III examination and admissions within stipulated time. But, the government is planning to approach the SC for extension of date, in order to not cause any new problem to the students. Already, the Advocate General has been consulted and he has suggested that the Government should approach SC for extension of the date,” said a senior official involved in the medical admissions in Telangana.

Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), which oversees the medical courses admissions in Telangana, vice chancellor Dr B Karunakar Reddy has briefed Telangana government about the problems students would face, if the date is not extended.

Students, parents demand sufficient time for preparation Students, aspiring to get into medical courses, have already started preparation and most of the colleges and coaching institutes are starting special short term batches from Monday. As the preparation has to be started once again from square one, students and parents are demanding government to give sufficient time for preparation for Eamcet-III.“Students have entered into a state of shock and disbelief and are in severe stress due to the developments, which led to Eamcet-III. It is even more tough to start preparation now. Also, medical entrance is the toughest exam and at least 40 days are required for preparation. We urge government to give sufficient time to students for preparation and not cause further stress to them,” said T Mahendranath, the parent of a ranker student.
