Centre, RBI have become a laughing stock: AICC

Cong spokesperson says it will take a minimum of seven months to print lower value currency notes

HYDERABAD: AICC spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “unplanned” demonetisation decision as a cruel act carried out by the democratically elected government on its own people, without taking minimum precautionary measures.

“The RBI and Centre with their haphazard and ever-changing decisions have become a laughing stock before people. Everyday we have a new set of rules. One day they say they would regulate domestic gold holdings and the other day, they deny it. A sort of panicky situation is created among people by the inconsistent acts of the Centre,” he criticised on Saturday.

The AICC leader, who was in the city as part of Congress party’s efforts to carry out a campaign across the country against the “improper” implementation of demonetisation, tried to pick holes in its execution.

The unplanned move had caused untold hardships to all sections of people right from daily wage earners to people belonging to middle class, he said..

“It will take a minimum of seven months time to print lower value currency notes. That means people of all sections of the society, particularly those belonging to lower income groups, will have to stand in long queues before banks and ATMs, for another seven months. It is a crisis created by the Modi government without considering its ramifications,” the Congress leader attacked.

Alleging that there was a sudden economic activity prior to the announcement of demonetisation and a huge jump in bank deposits of BJP leaders, Singhvi demanded an inquiry by a Supreme Court judge.
“Before the announcement on November 8, huge amounts of cash was deposited in the accounts of BJP leaders. This itself gives scope to doubts that PM Modi selectively shared vital information to make money for some people. Bank transactions with regard to property and bank deposits of each BJP leader should be examined,” he  demanded.
